[...] Imagine all the people in the world floating around, freely. They group together for a while, and some float further. Others dock to the people left behind. Clusters evolve and clusters dissolve. Relax, this is not a yoga excersise, this is the image we tried to create in our previous posting about The Big Pond. [...]

Hia, to add to Ali's remark ... we love the feedback!

The levelling of the world into a flat environment has to do with creating equal opportunities, removing barriers for trade and travel and easier access to communication. The limitations for interactions between people are reduced (so goes the story). However, these interactions still lead to clustering of people, people still group together. A flattened India didn't result into evenly spread out independ IT consultants, it resulted in the construction of IT Hubs like Bangalore.

So, the rules changed, people still cluster, only the patterns that emerge are different than before. Hope this makes some sense :)

Hi Jay,
We appreciate your comment. We did refer to Friedman's book in the article. However; there are strong oppositions to the idea that the world is flat; but rather is spiky. The work of Richard Florida is outstanding in this regard and it states that the world is spiky. A compromising view is that if the world is flat; it is so with a tilt.
As we progrss with these articles we shall provide our conclusions as based on the fish metaphor.

I find the fish metafore confusing.

Thomas L. Friedman has written a national best seller. Called The World is flat.

A good read about globalization and the so called leveling of the playing field.
