How Fast Does Your Vendor Go – Transparency In Outsourcing

We all know that the key ingredient to successful outsourcing is frequent and fast feedback; keep your customer in the loop, let him know about your progress and problems and get him involved.

Next to “communication” the keyword is “transparency”.

What happens if you take this to the next level? What if the productivity of the developers is captured by a third party? What if the “know-how” of your team members is directly visible to your customers? Talk about Transparency!

Programeter has just launched their Outsourcing edition. As a service provider you use it to check in your code base and it provides you productivity and competence metrics. Now your customers can view the same metrics.

“Look at contributions of your project team members while they proceed with development of your software product code, and mitigate project risks with an unmatched level of remote project transparency.”

Is this the ultimate transparency? Will this be a new prerequisite for service providers; “you have to be on Programeter to earn our business”?

What do you think?

  1. This is tricky. It can increase trust when used properly. But it can also be used as a big stick to hit the vendor with. Developers will have the feeling of Big Brother. in such situation it makes matters worse.

  2. this is good. people find out if you have anything to hide. without anything to hide problems will be addressed immediately, not later.

  3. I am not quite impressed with the transparency. Of course there is no way to be scared that your clients can view the same metrics as long as you do what you are supposed to do but my concern is that, the privacy of your operations will be divulged. There are some company procedures or stuffs that should be kept among the providers.

  4. Vangtel (http://www.vangtel.com) offers a comprehensive solution that enables companies to set up their own IT operations in Mexico at reduced cost and risk. Companies using Vangtel's services have complete control over their projects.

  5. thanks for bringing this up.. i hadn't thought about any privacy issues. that seems an area worth explorting. especially in a inter-national context.
